Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) is a safe and effective alternative to pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of: anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, poor memory, ADD, ADHD, OCD, traumatic brain injury, pain, cognitive dysfunction and many other conditions. We use this device in our clinic in conjunction with acupuncture to treat many of the above conditions with great success.
The CES is a small hand-held device that stimulates the brain using a low electrical current that connects with sponge electrodes clipped onto the earlobes. CES therapy acts by directly stimulating the brain's hypothalamic area with specific electrical frequencies that trigger the brain to manufacture and regulate its own neurochemicals including norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin and acetylcholine. The sensation from the electrodes is very comfortable, pleasant and relaxing.
The FDA has recognized CES devices for use in treatment of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Studies show that after only a 20 minute session, many patients feel light and relaxed right away. There are several positive changes in neurochemicals in blood plasma as well.
After one 20-minute CES session studies show a:
50% increase of serotonin, which improves mood, increases pain tolerance, and decreases insomnia.
98% increase in beta endorphins which decrease pain.
25% increase in melatonin which induces sleep.
75% increase of adrenocorticotrophic hormone which aids the body's equilibrium, the ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions.
Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation effects are cumulative, so those who do not respond initially may benefit when given daily treatments (20–60 minutes) for one month or longer.
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology (April 2001, Volume 7, Issue 2, pages 72-78) showed that the cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is also beneficial to fibromyalgia patients. They performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which treated patients showed a 28% improvement in tender point scores, and a 27% improvement in self-rated scores of general pain level. The number of subjects rating their quality of sleep as poor dropped from 60% at the beginning of the study to 5%. In addition, there were significant gains in the self-rated feelings of well-being and quality of life, plus gains in six stress-related psychological test measures.
In closing, it is clear that Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation is a safe, non-invasive, form of therapy without any side-effects. We offer this treatment in conjuction with your acupuncture treatments. We also sell the CES unit to our patients for regular home use.
