Astaxanthin: Nature's Most Powerful Antioxidant

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

Don’t let the big word confuse you. Astaxanthin (As-tax-an-thin) is a very important naturally occurring carotenoid pigment that is found in krill and wild caught salmon. It is considered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants. Many times referred to as a “super antioxidant.”

Like all antioxidants, astaxanthin, fights free radicals; however, this power-packed carotenoid has 550 times stronger antioxidant power than vitamin E, is 54 times stronger than beta-carotene, 800 times stronger than CoQ10, 550 times more powerful than green tea catechins, and is 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C!

Another interesting thing that makes it stand apart from other antioxidants is that, unlike some antioxidants, astaxanthin does not become a pro-oxidant in the body, so it will never cause harmful oxidation.

Astaxanthin offers many positive health benefits. Let’s look at a few…

Benefits of Astaxanthin:

  • Anti-inflammatory.

  • Reduces wrinkles and age spots.

  • Diminishes fine lines.

  • Improves eyesight and helps protect our eyes from a variety of problems, including cataracts, age-related, macular degeneration, inflammatory eye disease, etc.

  • Relieves muscle soreness.

  • Alleviates joint pain.

  • Benefits the heart and cardiovascular system.

  • Protects skin from UVB rays.

  • Improves endurance and recovery time when exercising.

  • Increases energy.

  • Improves focus.

As you can see, the benefits are wide spread. Not only does it fight harmful free radicals, it also helps with inflammation, pain, protects the skin, increases energy, and even aids in combating wrinkles and fine lines!

Since most of us are deficient in this very important antioxidant, it is important to consider taking a supplement, so that the benefits can begin taking root.
